West Coast โ Deep South
13 cities, thousands of miles of desert, mountains and asphalt. Scroll to hit the road.
San Francisco
The Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, fog and impossibly steep streets. A Pacific starting line โ grab a clam chowder at Fisherman's Wharf and walk down Lombard Street.
Los Angeles
Hollywood Hills, Venice Beach, palm trees and endless freeways. Where cinema meets surf โ from Griffith Observatory you can see the whole bowl of lights.
San Diego
The southernmost tip of California before the Mexican border. Balboa Park, USS Midway and arguably the best fish tacos north of Tijuana.
Phoenix
The heart of the Sonoran Desert. House-sized saguaros, red rocks and dry 100ยฐF+ air. A gateway to Sedona and the Grand Canyon.
Las Vegas
The Strip, neon reaching the sky, casinos that don't know day from night. A side trip to Red Rock Canyon or Hoover Dam brings you back to earth.
Colorado Springs
Sitting at 6,000 ft under the 14,000 ft Pikes Peak. Garden of the Gods serves red sandstone monoliths sandwiched between mountain and prairie.
Santa Fe
The oldest state capital in the US. Sand-colored adobe buildings, art galleries everywhere, and spicy green chile on the side of everything.
El Paso
The Rio Grande, with Ciudad Juรกrez right across the river. Desert spills into Texas โ smoked brisket and the Franklin Mountains in the backdrop.
Austin
"Keep Austin Weird." The Texas capital with a thriving live-music scene (SXSW, ACL) and arguably the best smoked brisket on the planet at Franklin BBQ.
New Orleans
The French Quarter, jazz spilling out of every other doorway, gumbo and beignets. The Mississippi meets the Caribbean in a single city.
Clarksdale
The birthplace of the blues. The crossroads of 49 and 61 where, as legend has it, Robert Johnson sold his soul for a guitar. Juke joints after dark.
Brunswick
Small coastal town on the way south โ gateway to the Golden Isles (St. Simons, Jekyll, Sea Island). Live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, shrimp boats in the harbor and the Marshes of Glynn before the final push to Florida.
Miami
The end of the road. Art Deco South Beach, Little Havana, a cafecito and bathtub-warm ocean. 4,700 miles from the Pacific โ you've reached the Atlantic.
